History of the bag: Céline Luggage Tote

History of the bag: Céline Luggage Tote

The iconic Céline bag

The Céline Luggage Tote is now seen as one of the most popular bags form the high-end brand Céline. It came out in 2010, when creative director Phoebe Philo revitalized the brand. The bag wasn’t as popular as other designer brands in the beginning. It was easily available on the shelves of their stores and even for sale online.

But it all changed when they did a relaunch several years later and celebrities, including the Olsen twins, showed up carrying this bag on their arms.

The design of the bag

The bag’s design is a timeless classic combined with endless functionality. It has a large squared bottom with flap out winged sides, what makes the bag even bigger and more practical. The bag has a zip top opening and double handles. The detailing of this distinguished designed bag include an outside zip pocket. After the Luggage Tote became popular, they released 4 extra sizes. From smallest to largest, they are called Nano, Micro, Mini, Medium Phantom or Shoulder, Large Phantom. The Luggage Tote is available in different materials like calf leather, calf nubuck, crocodile, textile and linen, to name a few options, and comes in different color ways: solid color, bicolor and tricolor.

Céline Phantom Tote

Next to the Luggage Tote, there is also the Phantom Tote from Céline. This bag looks very similar but has a few differences. The Phantom has wider “wings” and less different sizes. The Phantom doesn’t have a zipper to close the bag and also the lining is different. The Luggage Tote has leather on the inside but the Phantom has suede. And the last small dissimilarity is the braided leather detail on the zipper on the front of the bag.
