Collection: Louis Vuitton

Louis Vuitton. If you ask a designer lover to name one of their favorite brands, they would definitely name this luxury brand. We are in love with pretty much every item and every collection of Louis Vuitton. But the pretty Louis Vuitton collections weren’t always so extensive as we know them now. Many of the items we all want to have in our bag collections now, were only designed in the 'second phase' of the Louis Vuitton brand.

It all started in 1828. The legendary Louis Vuitton was born. Only ten years later his mother died, and his father remarried another woman. Louis Vuitton and his stepmother did not get along at all. Vuitton decided to walk away to Paris (400 kilometres!!) Monsieur Marechal (a very well-known producer of cases and bags at that time) took Louis Vuitton under his wing and he learned Vuitton the tricks of the trade, which he was specialised in. Louis Vuitton was only 16 years old at that time.

Thanks to Marechal, Louis Vuitton learned a lot and he built his own customer base. The elite of Paris had a lot of attention for the work of Vuitton. In 1853 Louis Vuitton was chosen by the French Empress Eugenie de Montijo (wife of Napoleon III) as her official supplier. Louis Vuitton's prestige then soared.

17 years after he came to Paris, he opened his first store. Soon after he released his first collection of trunks. Louis Vuitton became the biggest luggage giant in France. His success was continued by his son Georges Vuitton when Louis died in 1892.

One of Georges’ major creations is the famous classic Monogram Canvas, with its diamonds, circles, and flowers. This design was first introduced and trademarked in 1896. It is know the most well-known and famous print of Louis Vuitton.

The blocked patterns are also very famous, you could recognize the dark brown and brown one as the Louis Vuitton Damier Ebene print. The grey and white one is named: Louis Vuitton Damier Azur. The classic bags without any print can be found under the name: Louis Vuitton Epi.

Throughout the 1900s Louis Vuitton really started to expand their business, as they started introducing bags and items next to their famous trunks. One of the first ever bags designed was the big travel bag; the Keepall in 1930, a more practical alternative for bringing a trunk with you.

Then the handbag became a fashion item and Louis Vuitton could not stay behind. That’s when in 1932 the Louis Vuitton Speedy came to the light. The first ever Louis Vuitton handbag. It came in four different sizes: The Speedy 25, the Speedy 30, the Speedy 35 and the Speedy 40, in which the numbers in the names are standing for the bag’s dimensions. It came not only in various sizes. The prints and materials were also all different from each other.

Not very much later, the popular bags like the Louis Vuitton Alma, the Louis Vuitton Noé and the Louis Vuitton Papillon followed. Around the 1950’s, the Louis Vuitton brand extended their collection with several categories, making products like small Louis Vuitton purses, Louis Vuitton wallets, and Louis Vuitton accessories.

In 1997, Marc Jacobs became the first ever creative director of the Louis Vuitton brand. That’s when the brand started to look like how we know the it now. Jacob’s began to create an opening for the brand to enter the fashion world. Louis Vuitton clothing and Louis Vuitton jewelry were added to the collection.

Marc Jacobs also caused a lot of amazing collaborations for the brand. In this way the most beautiful bags were designed. Louis Vuitton collaborations that were really controversial were among others: Louis Vuitton X Stephen Sprouse, Louis Vuitton X Supreme, Louis Vuitton X Yayoi Kusuma and Louis Vuitton X Takashi Murakami.
