The start of the brand: Hermès

Etoile Luxury Vintage 2024 vintage designer bag Hermès
Hermès, I think we all dream of these bags. But what makes these bags so special? It all started by Thierry Hermès. Hermès, one of the world's most reputable luxury brands, has a long history dating back to 1837. The brand began as a humble saddlery shop and has grown into a symbol of timeless elegance and artisanal craftsmanship. Let's take a journey together through its fascinating history and discover the highlights of Hermès over the years.

How did Hermès start?

In 1837, Thierry Hermès opened his first store in Paris. He began as a saddler and harness maker, specializing in high-quality leather products. The quality of his craftsmanship soon attracted the attention of aristocrats and royal families, and it wasn't long before the Hermès brand became an established name in the world of luxury and horsemanship. After the death of Thierry Hermès in 1878, Charles-Émile took over the company. Under his leadership, Hermès expanded its product range to include other leather goods and accessories, including suitcasesbelts and gloves.  Émile-Maurice was also the one who opened the store on Rue Faubourg St. Honoré in Paris. (psst did you know that our brand is named to this shopping street in Paris L'Étoile de Saint HonoréIn the 20th century, led by the third generation of the family, Hermès introduced its famous silk scarves, known as the "Carrés," which quickly became iconic pieces in the fashion world. The brand name became a symbol of style and elegance as the brand always managed to maintain its reputation for excellence and craftsmanship.

Highlights of Hermès over the years

The Birkin bag: One of Hermès most iconic pieces, the Birkin bag, was created in 1984. The story goes that the then Chief Executive of Hermès, Jean-Louis Dumas, had a chance encounter with British actress and singer Jane Birkin during a flight. She complained that she could not find a suitable bag that was both stylish and functional. This created the famous Birkin bag, which is now one of the most coveted and exclusive bags in the world.

Expansion

Kelly bag: Another Hermès icon is the Kelly bag, originally known as the "Sac à dépêches." The bag got its current name after Princess Grace Kelly of Monaco often wore the accessory to hide her pregnant belly from the paparazzi. Its timeless design and perfect craftsmanship make the Kelly bag a timeless icon.

The Artisanal Department

Hermès has always valued craftsmanship. To emphasize this, the brand created the "Artisanal" department, where artisans create high-end, hand-crafted pieces. Each item is a work of art in itself and demonstrates Hermès' dedication to traditional techniques and craftsmanship. It is these highlights, along with the ongoing commitment to craftsmanship, workmanship and elegance, that have transformed Hermès from a simple saddlery to a global symbol of luxury and timeless style. In the present, Hermès continues to nurture its heritage and renew itself with new collections and designs that are rooted in tradition yet relevant to modern times. The brand continues to set the standard for quality, exclusivity and class in the world of fashion and luxury.

Hermès is not just another brand, but a lifestyle that stands for luxury, aesthetics and timeless classics. Every Hermès piece is steeped in history and character, and owning it is a tribute to the timeless heritage of this unique luxury house.
Whether it is a beautiful Birkin bag, an elegant silk scarf or a handmade accessory, Hermès continues to enchant people around the world with its unparalleled style and dedication to excellence.
